Aims: Hepassocin is a hepatokine that is related to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and NAFLD is associated with increased risk of diabetes. However, the relationship between hepassocin, NAFLD and diabetes is thus far unknown.
Patients & methods: A total of 200 age- and sex-matched nondiabetic (DM[-]), and newly diagnoseddiabetes subjects (DM[+]) with or without NAFLD were recruited.
Results: Serum hepassocin concentrations were elevated in DM(+), NAFLD and DM(+) groups compared with the DM(-) group. Of the variables tested in the multivariate linear regression model, fasting plasma glucose, NAFLD and triglycerides were associated with hepassocin concentrations. Conclusion: Increased hepassocin levels might have clinical implications and play a role as a biomarker for diabetes and NAFLD.
